Just Start

A few weeks ago, I shared an idea with a colleague.

The idea was simple—but powerful.

We wanted to build an AI tool that could track social media conversations around political candidates, analyze public sentiment, and generate insights that leaders could use to shape their campaigns.

In Kenya, the next election will likely be influenced heavily by young voters and technology.
And where are these conversations happening?

Social media.

That makes it a goldmine of real-time insights—if you know how to interpret it.

The idea made sense.

The opportunity was clear.

And through my colleague, we were even introduced to a group of developers who could build the tool.

Everything seemed to be in place.

But the idea never took off.

Why?

We spent too much time talking.

There was hesitation around capital—everyone was waiting for someone else to commit first.

And slowly, momentum died.

A few weeks later, my colleague told me he had come across a similar product already in the market.

Then, on another day, I met someone else working on a similar concept—this time targeting a different audience, but built on the same idea.

And it hit me:

👉 Ideas are everywhere. Execution is rare.

This experience reinforced something important:

The difference between entrepreneurs and everyone else is not ideas.

It is the ability to start.

Many people believe they are stuck because:

  • They lack capital
  • They lack knowledge
  • They lack connections

But often, the real problem is different:

  • Overthinking
  • Fear of failure
  • Waiting for perfect conditions

As Mark Zuckerberg once said:

“Ideas don’t come out fully formed. They only become clear as you work on them.”

Entrepreneurs understand this.

They don’t wait for clarity.

They create clarity through action.

Instead of asking:

  • “Is this idea perfect?”

They ask:

  • “What is the smallest way I can test this?”

Instead of waiting for funding:

  • They start with what they have

Instead of planning endlessly:

  • They build, test, learn, and improve

The reality is this:

👉 The market does not reward the best ideas
👉 It rewards the best executed ideas

In hindsight, we did not need:

  • A fully developed AI system
  • A large team
  • Significant capital

We could have started with:

  • A simple prototype
  • Manual data collection
  • A small test with one or two clients

But we didn’t.

And someone else did.

The Entrepreneurial Lesson

If you are serious about entrepreneurship:

  • Stop waiting for perfect timing
  • Stop waiting for enough money
  • Stop overthinking

Start.

Start small.
Start imperfect.
Start uncertain.

Because in the end:

👉 The gap between ideas and success is action.

Final Thought

Every day you delay:

Someone else is starting.
Someone else is testing.
Someone else is building.

The question is:

What idea are you still thinking about… instead of starting?
